Kilt: This is how modern the trend will be in autumn/winter 2024

The kilt is on trend in autumn/winter 2024 – this is how to style it in a modern way.

In fashion, it is common for historic garments to be taken out of their original cultural or historical context and reinterpreted. This was the case with the kimono, military jackets or cowboy boots – to name just a few. This allows designers to express their innovativeness and creativity. Among the many garments that are being redesigned, we also find the kimono – a piece that is being reissued in a punky way at Vivienne Westwood, sustainable at Rave Review and luxurious at Burberry and is experiencing a huge revival in autumn/winter 2024.

This is the story behind the kilt

The Scottish skirt, also known as a kilt, has its origins in the 16th century in the Scottish Highlands. Originally, the kilt was not a skirt, but a piece of fabric up to five metres long with a checked pattern that was wrapped around the body and thrown over the shoulder (called the “Great Kilt”). In the 18th century, this developed into the more modern kilt, which was worn artfully folded around the hips and fastened with a brooch. Later, more seams were added and the cloth finally turned into a skirt.

The great special feature lies not only in the structure, but also in the choice of tartan, also the check pattern, whose colors indicate membership of a particular Scottish clan. Today, this symbolism is lost in many places, but it still has a high value in the homeland. Designers like to give the garment a fashionable and modern touch – Chopova Lowena, for example, who combined the check pattern with vintage leather belts.

Daniel Lee designed a particularly elegant version of the contemporary kilt for Burberry – maxi-length and with pleats – while the upcycling label Rave Review presented an edgy maxi skirt made of various composite fabrics with a check pattern.
