SOMETHING SPECIAL: Parker Meadows is the face of the Tigers’ unlikely playoff hunt

Game Notes: One way or another, the Tigers are tied with the Twins in the battle for the last wild card spot in the American League.

The Twins lost to the Guardians for the third time in four games on Thursday while the Tigers had a bad day, giving the Tigers the final halftime game they needed to tie the standings. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Tigers still have some work to do as the Twins hold the tiebreaker by winning the season series.

Nevertheless, given their starting position a few weeks ago with only nine games remaining, the Tigers could not have hoped for a better starting position.

After Thursday’s off day, work begins again against the Baltimore Orioles, another team fighting for a wild card position. The Orioles have been one of the AL’s top teams all year, but have fallen behind the New York Yankees in the race for the AL East and have yet to secure their spot as the top wild card team.

That means they have a lot at stake when they host the Tigers in Baltimore this weekend.

The Tigers have only one starting pitcher scheduled for this series, and that’s Reese Olson on Saturday. That means it’s likely going to be a mishmash of the Tigers’ bullpen pitchers with some massive relievers trying to help them get to the finish line on Friday, a strategy that worked very well to get the Tigers back in the playoff race.

With a win on Friday and a Twins loss to the Red Sox in Boston, the Tigers will have their fate in their own hands for the final eight games.
