Can the Arizona Cardinals beat the Detroit Lions?

Can the Arizona Cardinals beat the Detroit Lions?

ARIZONA – The Arizona Cardinals host the Detroit Lions in Week 3.

John Maakaron covers the Lions for Lions on SI. Before the game, he recently answered a few questions for Cardinals on SI:

1. The Lions are close to a 1-1 tie this week. What is the overall feeling about this team after the mixed results so far?

John Maakaron: “The Lions missed some offensive moves earlier in the year, which resulted in a mediocre performance in the first two games. So, even after a 1-1 start, there is a feeling that the Lions are capable of much more. Overall, there is still a sense of confidence in the team’s locker room, even after last week’s difficulties.”

2. How do the Lions view the Cardinals from Detroit’s perspective after a pretty eye-catching performance?

Maakaron: “The Lions are aware of the Cardinals’ power, especially on offense. The explosiveness that was on display against the Rams will not be taken lightly. In particular, the Lions are preparing for the difficulties that Kyler Murray brings, as well as the physicality of rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrision Jr.

“Offensively, the Lions hope to create mismatches. However, the Cardinals pose a major threat, including safety Budda Baker. Dan Campbell called Baker a ‘problem’ because of his inability to find the ball. The Lions are preparing for an uphill battle and looking to make a statement after struggling earlier in the year.”

3. Everyone knows Detroit’s star players, but enlighten fans in the desert about some underrated names you should know before Sunday:

Maakaron: “One player who may not get as much recognition across the country is defensive end Levi Onwuzurike. He was plagued by injuries in his first three seasons, but the 2021 second-round pick is now fully healthy and getting things done. In two games, Onwuzurike has been a strong contributor on offense.

“The Lions have several talented options on the defensive line, with Onwuzurike joining Alim McNeill and nose tackle DJ Reader. With Aidan Hutchinson generating pressure from the outside, the defensive line as a whole becomes one of the team’s greatest strengths.”

4. What factors/pairings do you think will ultimately determine the outcome?

Maakaron: “The Detroit Lions may be without linebacker Alex Anzalone, who suffered a brain injury in Sunday’s loss, so players like Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes would take on the primary duties. Kyler Murray’s agility and ability to escape the pocket would test the discipline of those linebackers.

“The Lions’ offense needs to have a better day after struggling inside against the Buccaneers. Offensive success from Frank Ragnow, Graham Glasgow and Kevin Zeitler will improve the Lions’ chances of running the ball efficiently.”

5. Final prediction:

Maakaron: “The personnel similarities between the Lions and the Cardinals suggest a close game. However, I hope that after last week’s difficulties, the Lions will find their identity on the field and leave Arizona with a 26-24 win.”
