Trim comments: We’re pretty happy with how the preseason rankings are shaping up after a week of games. The only teams on the preseason slate that lost were Kenston and University, so there’s not a lot of movement yet. … Mentor put together a strong second half to beat Massillon Jackson. The Cardinals will need a better first half this week to get past St. Ignatius. … No. 2 Lake Catholic knocked off Cardinal Mooney IN Youngstown. That doesn’t happen very often. … No. 3 VASJ destroyed Canton GlenOak. Rest assured, when Mooney comes to VASJ this week, it won’t be easy after Mooney just got dispatched at home by Lake Catholic. … What an impressive first week for No. 4 Chardon, who headed to Orlando, Fla., with a 29-7 win. That young defense has really stepped up. … No. 5 Perry had no trouble with Madison. The Pirates can’t underestimate Euclid this week, as they face No. 6 Kirtland in Week 3. Speaking of Kirtland, the Hornets had major cramping issues in their 55-34 win over Dalton. They need to get healthy and stay healthy going forward. … No. 7 Hawken gave veteran coach Mark Iammarino his 200th career win against Rhodes. A game against Berkshire on Thursday will be tougher. … No. 8 Gilmour also got through easily. The Week 3 game between Hawken and Gilmour will be one to watch. … Riverside was impressive on both sides of the ball in Jeremy Ishmael’s debut as head coach, so the Beavers move up to No. 9. … Kenston, previously No. 9, drops out after a loss to Boardman. That allows Benedictine to enter the crop league after its season opener. … There’s still a long way to go, but Week 1 confirmed what we suspected at the start of the season.
