Michigan football hosts another top-15 team on Saturday to kick off the Big Ten schedule. And old Pac-12 and Rose Bowl nemesis USC football enters the Big House in Ann Arbor.

In the first conference matchup between the two teams, Michigan (2-1) will face USC (2-0) at 3:30 p.m. at Michigan Stadium. Michigan will have a new quarterback, junior Alex Orji, to start the nine conference games after new head coach Sherrone Moore announced on Monday that Orji would replace the struggling Davis Warren.

Michigan’s offense suffered a setback when it was announced before the game that star tight end Colston Loveland would be out with an upper-body injury.

His first career start is against USC QB Miller Moss and an undefeated Trojans team making its conference debut in the new 18-team Big Ten that stretches coast to coast. USC already has a ranked win over LSU and is looking to become the second team to beat Michigan on the road after Texas did so two weeks ago.

Michigan, the three-time defending Big Ten champion, enters the game as a 4½-point underdog and looks to avoid an 0-1 conference start for the first time since 2019. The game begins at 3:30 p.m. at the Big House. It will air on CBS and can be streamed on Paramount Plus and Fubo (free trial).

Michigan vs. USC – Pre-Game Update

All eyes will once again be on Michigan’s quarterback spot after Warren was replaced by Orji three weeks into the season. Moore had to make the most important decision of his career as a young head coach and will have to get the offense going for the first time this season after an off week against No. 12 USC.

USC’s defense appears to have improved over the first three weeks of the season, presenting an interesting challenge for Orji and the Michigan offense, which often seems to establish the run. The Wolverines may be without their top target, Colston Loveland, after the tight end left the field early last week with an apparent arm injury.

On the other side of the ball, it will be a duel between Michigan’s defense and the Trojans’ offense. USC ranks 16th nationally in total offense (495.5 yards per game) and 27th in scoring offense (37.5 points per game), while the Wolverines rebounded with a strong performance against Arkansas State after being pressured at times by Texas.

Michigan is trying to avoid its first loss in a Big Ten opener since losing on the road to Wisconsin in 2019.

Michigan vs. USC Predictions

Tony Garcia, Detroit Free Press: It’s rare that there’s so much unknown going on in Week 4, but that’s exactly what happens when there’s a big quarterback change. It could go in a couple of different directions. Maybe Orji unleashes the running element, it complements the defense perfectly, and Michigan has found a new formula. Or maybe there’s a reason Orji wasn’t the starter originally and it’s showing. Or maybe there are just glimpses, but not enough for a whole game. Either way, USC has too much talent and too solid a scheme. The selection: UT 27, Michigan 16.
