Elon Musk gives first glimpse into the Cortex supercluster at Giga Texas

Elon Musk recently gave a first look at Cortex, Tesla’s supercomputer cluster at the Giga Texas complex. The short video, which shows a part of Cortex that is still being set up, was posted by the CEO on the social media platform X.

As seen in the video, the Giga, Texas-based supercluster includes rows of Nvidia H100/H200 GPUs. Musk previously noted on X that Cortex will have about 100,000 H100/H200 GPUs, which should give Tesla’s AI training some serious power. “Video from inside Cortex today, the massive new AI training supercluster being built at Tesla’s Austin headquarters to solve real-world AI problems,” Musk wrote in his post on X.

Tesla’s efforts in artificial intelligence are crucial to the development of two of the company’s most important products: Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Optimus, a humanoid robot. The feasibility of Tesla’s planned robotaxi network, which Elon Musk outlined in Master Plan, Part Deux back in 2016, depends heavily on the success of FSD. Optimus, on the other hand, has the potential to transform numerous industries, such as manufacturing.

Cortex is a very large supercomputer cluster, so the facility required a complete addition to Giga Texas’ main building. Musk also previously mentioned that Cortex will require about 130 MW of cooling this year before expanding cooling to over 500 MW over the next 18 months. Drone flyovers of the Giga Texas facility show that a large supercomputer cooling system is being worked on near Cortex.

The Giga, Texas-based supercluster is not the only supercomputer Tesla will build for its FSD efforts. Earlier this month, Tesla signed an agreement with Buffalo, New York, to extend the company’s commitment to operate Giga New York for another five years, through 2034. Under the new agreement, Tesla will invest $500 million in a Dojo supercomputer project in Buffalo, with $350 million to be invested in the project by the end of next year. Dojo, Tesla reported in previous presentations, is designed to help develop autonomous driving systems.
