The Australian Football League (AFL) is the highest football league in Australia and is incredibly popular on the fifth continent: 18 teams compete for the championship, the Grand Final in Australian Football, also known as “Footy”, takes place at the end of September. Last year, the Collingwood Football Club secured the coveted title. The Melbourne Cricket Stadium is the venue for the Grand Final. The record champions are currently Carlton FC and Essendon FC, each with 16 titles. Australian football has a few special features: the full-contact sport is played on an oval field, the egg-shaped ball can be passed by shot or by handpass, with it being passed with the fist. Once a player has the ball, the ball must be bounced every 15 meters. Now comes the preliminary round final. SPORT1+ is now showing the match Geelong Cats – Brisbane Lions.
