AI-generated videos: YouTube relies on Google DeepMind

YouTube, the video unit of Google Inc. and the search engine subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOGL), announces AI features from Google DeepMind for Shorts creators.

On September 18, YouTube announced artificial intelligence features for creators on its Shorts platform based on Google’s DeepMind video generation model.

Known as Veo, the features allow creators to add AI-generated backgrounds to their videos and use written prompts to create self-paced, six-second video clips.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said he hopes Veo will enable creators to produce more Shorts videos using AI.

“Everything we’ve demonstrated with AI is designed to really improve your work, make it faster and more efficient, and bring your creative ideas to life faster,” Mohan said at the Made on YouTube event in New York.

Veo AI backgrounds are an improvement over a similar AI generation feature from YouTube called Dream Screen, which YouTube announced in 2023.
