Davis Cup finals: German team in quarter-finals against Canada

Davis Cup finals: German team in quarter-finals against Canada

Status: 20.09.2024 14:33

The German Davis Cup team will first face Canada in the quarterfinals of the final round in Malaga in November. This was the result of the draw for the final round on Thursday (September 19, 2024).

If team manager Michael Kohlmann’s team were to prevail against the Canadians, they would face either Spain or the Netherlands in the semifinals.

In the group matches in Zhuhai, China, shortly after the US Open, the German selection, despite being severely weakened by substitutions, managed to qualify for the final round in Malaga, Spain, from November 19 to 24.

Without world number two Alexander Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff and Dominik Koepfer, Yannick Hanfmann, Maximilian Marterer, Henry Squire and the two doubles specialists Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz, finalists at the US Open, finished second in their group behind the USA.

After two confident opening victories against Slovakia and Chile (3-0 each), the German team only had to admit defeat to the USA at the end of the group phase.

Kohlmann hopes for comeback of Struff, Koepfer – and possibly Zverev

It has not yet been decided which team Germany will compete with in Malaga in November. Zverev, whose absence in China was explained by the German Tennis Association (DTB) as being due to the strains of the journey, has so far left his participation open.

The ATP Finals will take place in Turin directly before the Davis Cup finals. If Zverev were to play in Malaga afterwards, his winter break would be shortened even further. The new season will begin again at the end of December with the United Cup in Australia, where Zverev and Germany are the defending champions.

Struff and Koepfer are not available for the Davis Cup team in China due to injuries. “There is definitely hope that we will gain one or two players in Malaga. We will have to wait and see who that will be.”said Kohlmann.

For Canada, Felix Auger-Aliassime, currently number 21 in the world rankings, is the best-ranked player.
