Changes to the start of Oktoberfest at MVG – what passengers need to know

During the first Oktoberfest weekend, there will be numerous restrictions at MVG. There will be cancellations on some lines.

Munich – The Oktoberfest 2024 starts on Saturday (September 21). To kick things off, some streets in Munich city center will be temporarily closed over the weekend due to the traditional Wiesn parade of the festival hosts and the traditional costume and riflemen’s parade. In addition to car traffic, the MVG bus and train services are also affected. There will be partial cancellations and diversions.

Parades cause restrictions at the MVG at the start of the Oktoberfest this weekend

The restrictions will apply on both Saturday and Sunday (September 22nd). On Saturday, due to the Oktoberfest parade, there will be restrictions on tram lines 16, 17, 18, 27 and 28 from around 9:45 a.m. to 12 p.m. The section from Karlsplatz (Stachus) to Sendlinger Tor will be closed to trams during this time. According to the MVG, passengers must therefore expect the following restrictions:

  • Die Tram 16 can only travel between the Romanplatz and Hauptbahnhof Nord stops. There is a connection to Karlsplatz (Stachus), Sendlinger Tor and Müllerstraße with tram 18 from Hauptbahnhof Süd. The section between Reichenbachplatz and Mariannenplatz is omitted.
  • Die Tram 17 runs on the section between Hauptbahnhof Nord and Maxmonument on the tram route 19 and from the Maxmonument stop on the tram route 16 to St. Emmeram. There is a connection to Karlsplatz (Stachus) and Sendlinger Tor with tram 18 from Hauptbahnhof Süd.
  • Die Tram 18 will be interrupted and will run in the sections Westendstraße to Hauptbahnhof and Schwanseestraße to Sendlinger Tor.
  • Die Tram 27 can only travel in the section from Petuelring to Karlsplatz (Stachus). The Sendlinger Tor stop can be reached with tram 18.
  • Die Tram 28 only started operating at 12 o’clock.

The following restrictions will apply to bus services on Saturday:

  • The CityRing 58/68 cannot travel in the section between Hauptbahnhof Süd and Goetheplatz from approx. 10.30 a.m. to approx. 12.30 p.m.
  • The Bus line 52 can only travel between Tierpark (Alemannenstraße) and Baaderstraße from 8 a.m. to around 11 a.m. The section between Gärtnerplatztheater and Sendlinger Tor is cancelled.
  • The Bus line 62 will be diverted from 8 a.m. to around 11 a.m. in the section between Lagerhausstrasse and Schweigerstrasse via Wittelsbacherstrasse and Auenstrasse. The section between Ehrengutstrasse and Baaderstrasse will be cancelled. The diversion route will stop at the stops of line 132 in the section between Roecklplatz and Corneliusbrücke.

According to the MVG, exactly when the individual lines will run according to schedule again depends on when the affected road sections are reopened to traffic by the police.

Traditional costume and riflemen’s parade to the Oktoberfest on Sunday – these are the restrictions on trams and buses

On Sunday, due to the traditional costume and riflemen’s parade, the following changes to the MVG tram lines are expected to take place between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m.:

  • Die Tram 16 From around 7:30 a.m. it only runs between Romanplatz and Sendlinger Tor, and from around 8:30 a.m. it only runs between Romanplatz and Hauptbahnhof Nord. The section from Müllerstraße or Hauptbahnhof to Effnerplatz is no longer running.
  • Die Tram 17 will be interrupted from around 7:30 a.m. and will only run between Amalienburgstrasse and Sendlinger Tor, and from around 8:30 a.m. only between Amalienburgstrasse and Hauptbahnhof Nord and in the section from St. Emmeram to Effnerplatz. The section from Sendlinger Tor to Effnerplatz will be cancelled.
  • Die Tram 18 will be interrupted from around 8.30 a.m. and will run in the sections Westendstraße to Hauptbahnhof and Schwanseestraße to Sendlinger Tor.
  • Die Tram 19 will be interrupted from around 7:30 a.m. and will only run between Willibaldplatz and the main station, and from around 8:30 a.m. only between Willibaldplatz and the main station and between Max-Weber-Platz and Berg am Laim station. The section Karlsplatz (Stachus) to Maximilianeum will be cancelled.
  • Die Tram 21 will be interrupted from around 7:30 a.m. and will run in the sections between Westfriedhof and Hauptbahnhof Nord and between St.-Veit-Straße and Max-Weber-Platz. The section Karlsplatz (Stachus) to Maximilianeum will be cancelled.
  • At Trams 27 and 28 From around 8.30 a.m. the Sendlinger Tor stop will be closed.

Due to the parade on Sunday, there will be the following bus schedule changes:

  • The CityRing 58/68 cannot travel on the section between Hauptbahnhof Süd and Goetheplatz from around 9:30 a.m. to around 3 p.m., as was the case on Saturday.
  • The Bus line 100 Skips the Odeonsplatz stop from approx. 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.
  • The Bus line 132 runs from around 8 a.m. to around 12.30 p.m. only in the section between Forstenrieder Park and Fraunhoferstraße. The section from Corneliusbrücke to Marienplatz is cancelled.
  • The Bus line 153 From 9:30 a.m. to approximately 2:30 p.m., the Von-der-Tann-Straße and Odeonsplatz stops cannot be reached.

Restrictions on bus line 134 due to the Wiesn security concept

In addition to the restrictions on the first Oktoberfest weekend, MVG passengers must also expect restrictions on bus line 134 between Wednesday (September 18) and Wednesday (October 9). The buses on the line must be diverted during the period in question due to the Oktoberfest security concept, the MVG announced. This means that the Alter Messeplatz and Theresienhöhe stops will be eliminated. In addition, there will also be timetable changes on many other MVG lines during Oktoberfest. (Juniors)
