Source: 5 dead in apparent murder-suicide on Long Island

SYOSSET, NY – Five people were killed in an apparent murder-suicide on Long Island on Sunday, a source told CBS News New York.

Nassau County police said officers were dispatched to a home on Wyoming Avenue in Syosset shortly before noon because shots had been fired.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a man outside the house who had apparently inflicted a gunshot wound on himself, police said. Police said four other victims were found inside the house.

All five people were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Neighbors say suspected shooter killed siblings days after mother’s death

Neighbors told CBS News New York’s Derick Waller that the man found dead outside the home had lived there with his mother his entire life. They also said the man had mental health issues and occasional public tantrums.

“I know how he screams when he has a seizure,” said neighbor Wendy Paisler.

According to neighbors, the man’s 95-year-old mother died a few days ago, and he and his siblings were trying to figure out what to do with the house. Neighbors said they saw the suspected shooter’s siblings, who were in town for their mother’s funeral, enter the house on Sunday.

“I think he just freaked out because … his mother left the house and the four siblings … they wanted to sell the house. And he had lived there his whole life and he really needed support, emotional support. And I think he just freaked out,” Paisler said.

Police have not yet released a motive or confirmed the names of the victims, but said it was an isolated incident and there was no danger to the public.

“They have to do something about these guns. Everyone has them,” said a neighbor.

“Very sad for his family and for him. You have to look at that and realize that I think he was petrified. From what the neighbors said, he sounded petrified because he was on the street,” Paisler said.

The investigation is ongoing. Nassau County Police are planning a press conference for Monday.
