$1.99 per month for a limited time, benefits for new subscribers

Disney wants to increase Disney+ subscribers before the end of the quarter in September 2024 – and before a new price increase takes effect.

In a new promotion starting Thursday, new and existing customers in the U.S. can get the ad-supported Disney+ Basic package for $1.99/month for the first three months. The new offer comes as the price of Disney+ Basic is set to increase from $7.99/month to $9.99/month starting October 17, along with the prices of Disney+ Premium, Hulu, ESPN+ and its multiservice packages. Disney is offering the special deal to eligible customers from September 12-27 on disneyplus.com; after the promotion period ends, the price of Disney+ Basic will be $9.99/month.

Disney is touting the $2/month Disney+ Basic offer as being “just in time for the fall blockbuster season,” which includes the premiere of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” the highest-grossing animated film of all time, which is set to premiere on the streamer on September 25.

Other shows highlighted in the commercial include Marvel’s “Agatha All Along,” a spin-off of “WandaVision” (premieres September 18 at 6 p.m. PT), and “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” starring Selena Gomez, a sequel to the Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” (October 30).

First launched in 2019, Disney+ is the dedicated streaming home for movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, as well as The Simpsons and more.

In the U.S. and Canada, Disney+ added 800,000 net new subscribers, reaching 54.8 million in the June 2024 quarter, while international Disney+ Core subscribers (excluding Disney+ Hotstar) declined by about 100,000 to 63.5 million. Disney has told investors it expects “modest growth” in Disney+ Core subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2024 (ending in September).
