Mississippi murder suspect caught in chilling footage after allegedly killing his mother

A chilling video shows the indifferent attitude of a teenage Mississippi murder suspect after she allegedly shot her mother, as well as the girl texting after the crime.

Kitchen surveillance footage shown during the murder trial of Carly Gregg, now 15, shows the moments before and after the alleged murder of her mother, Ashley Smylie, on March 19. Gregg was 14 when she allegedly killed Smylie with a .357 Magnum pistol.

The harrowing footage shows Gregg hiding something behind her back and walking toward her bedroom just moments before three gunshots ring out.

The footage shows Carly Gregg moments after she allegedly opened fire and killed her mother in March.

After the alleged murder, Gregg is seen leisurely strolling back into the family kitchen and sitting down on a stool. The family’s two Labrador retrievers followed her back into the kitchen area after the shooting.

During her trial, prosecutors said that Gregg texted her stepfather, Heath Smylie, after the murder to lure him home and ambush him.

When Heath Smylie took the stand on Tuesday, he testified that when he opened the kitchen door, “the gun flew into my face before the door was even three or four inches open, and from there it all happened pretty quickly.”

“The gun flashed in my face,” he said. “It went off twice more, but after the first shot, I had the gun in my hand and I ripped it away from Carly.” Heath was shot in the shoulder during the encounter with Gregg, police said.

Carly Gregg was seen on kitchen surveillance video shortly after she allegedly shot her mother.

Heath said his stepdaughter was “terrified” and screamed so much “as if she had seen a demon.”

“She looked terrified,” he said. “She was screaming like crazy, so scared, like she had seen a demon or something.”

At her first court appearance, Carly Gregg pleaded not guilty. Her bail was set at $1 million.

In her opening statements Monday, Rankin County Assistant District Attorney Kathryn White Newman said Ashley Smylie, a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, where her daughter attended school, had learned earlier in the day from a friend of Gregg’s that she smoked marijuana and owned disposable cell phones, WLBT reported. When they returned home, she found e-cigarettes in her daughter’s bedroom.

Gregg was charged as an adult with murder, attempted murder and tampering with evidence.

According to the Clarion Ledger, she refused to accept a plea bargain with a 40-year prison sentence, and her defense attorney pleaded insanity.
