NAFDAC destroys ₦43 billion worth of counterfeit medicines and medical devices in major operation

In a major move to combat the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard products, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday destroyed goods worth 43 billion naira in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The operation, which took place at a landfill site in Moniya, Akinyele local government area, involved the destruction of counterfeit medicines, medical devices and other products harmful to health.

NAFDAC Director-General Christiana Adeyeye, represented by the Director of Investigations and Enforcement, Shabba Mohammed, stressed the collective efforts that led to this operation.

Providing a detailed breakdown of the products seized, Adeyeye noted that multiple raids were carried out at different locations, confiscating both unregistered and registered medicines.

“The seized products include aphrodisiacs, potency enhancers, over-the-counter and prescription drugs,” she said.

She continued: “In total, more than 30 types of products were seized. These included banned codeine substances, narcotics, anti-malarials, aphrodisiacs, painkillers and antibiotics worth over 48 million naira, all of which were confiscated from drug traffickers.”

NAFDAC also collected intelligence on the illegal storage, sale and distribution of Schedule 1 narcotics by certain pharmaceutical dealers in Lagos and other locations across the country. “The Investigation and Enforcement Directorate raided several pharmaceutical warehouses and premises across the country and seized products valued at over ₦700 million,” Adeyeye added.

During raids by the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, further items to be destroyed were removed from circulation.

Adeyeye called on the public to support NAFDAC in its fight against fake medicines, counterfeit products and unhealthy processed foods by reporting unscrupulous manufacturers and businessmen engaging in illegal practices to the nearest NAFDAC office for immediate investigation.
