FC Bayern starts against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. A key Croatian player has already issued a warning.

Munich – The really tough task for FC Bayern in the Champions League is yet to come when they face heavyweights FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. The first match on Tuesday evening (September 17) was “only” Dinamo Zagreb.

Lightweight Zagreb? Petkovic sends warning to FC Bayern before CL opener

Of course, the match against the Croatian serial champions must be a success first, but coach Vincent Kompany’s team is still the clear favorite. “We have to keep winning, we just have to keep going.” Things have to be good again on Tuesday – and again after that. And so it goes on,” said the Belgian at the press conference on Monday.

But the upcoming opponent heard something against it – and in the person of striker Bruno Petkovic, he immediately issued a warning to FCB. “We have great respect for Bayern. But they also have to show that they are better than us. We also have our cards and want to play them,” said the 30-year-old, who has scored three goals in six competitive matches this season, to the Picture-Newspaper.

Petkovic on Bayern’s opponent Zagreb: “We are the big underdog, but…”

In the playoffs for the league phase, Dinamo managed to beat the top Azerbaijani club Qarabag FK comfortably by 2:0 and 3:0. They have made it into the CL, which will be played for the first time in the new format in 2024/25, and will now face possibly the toughest opponents right from the start. The third-placed team in the domestic league has a talented squad, with midfielder Martin Baturina being one of them.

Nevertheless, the roles are clearly distributed. Petkovic made no secret of this, but was still optimistic: “We know that we are playing against one of the best teams in the world and that we are the big underdogs.” But we also know our qualities: we have some strengths that make us unpredictable. I am therefore sure that with great effort there is a way for us to find Bayern’s weaknesses and take a good result with us to Zagreb.”

Zagreb striker Petkovic hopes for ignorance at FC Bayern

However, the Munich team has revealed only a few of these in recent weeks. In the 6:1 win against Kiel, the team shone for large parts of the game, and generally speaking, things were going pretty well for the German record champions. In the league, they had previously won against Freiburg and Wolfsburg, and in the cup they knocked second division Ulm out of the competition.

Could Bayern also prevent Zagreb from returning home without a point? Petkovic at least put forward an approach – and apparently hoped for a little ignorance on the FCB side: “I think we know a lot more about Bayern’s strengths than Bayern know about our strengths – because their players and their qualities are known worldwide. Not so much is known about our current team, on the other hand.”

Whether this will actually come true will be clear by 11pm on Tuesday at the latest. For the Munich team, the CL duel is also their second attempt at the trophy in the “final at home”. (masculine)
