Emily Blunt reflects on “The Devil Wears Prada” and “A Quiet Place”

Emily Blunt looks back on some of the biggest roles of her career.

The actress, who was nominated for her first Oscar earlier this year for her performance in the 2023 blockbuster biopic “Oppenheimer,” sat down with “Good Morning America” to chat about the popular “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) and the spooky “A Quiet Place” (2018).

Looking back on her first day of filming The Devil Wears Prada, Blunt described it as a “nerve-wracking” experience because “it was my first big film and I didn’t know what to expect.”

“I remember how nice Annie Hathaway was to me,” she recalled her co-star Anne Hathaway.

“And David Frankel, the director, created such a fun atmosphere,” she added. “You could improvise, you could throw in whatever you wanted and there were no mistakes.”

Her most memorable moment on her first day on set was when she “practically fell on Meryl Streep” during a scene in which she had to walk down a corridor in high heels, even though, as she admitted, she “is not very good at walking.”

“I just fell over, clipboard and everything, and just hit the floor,” she said, recalling that her co-star had not fallen out of character. “I just remember Meryl saying, ‘Oh, oh, Oh.”

When asked what Blunt learned from filming The Devil Wears Prada – her first foray into comedy – she said she learned to keep an “open mind” and “just throw everything out there, because you never know what’s going to be funny, and just try to be as free and relaxed as possible.”

“It was the perfect environment to try comedy for the first time because you could throw anything at the wall to see what stuck,” she noted. “Stanley [Tucci] would have 10 different interpretations of a line and Meryl is so flexible, she changes it every time so you never really know what you’re going to get on each take.”

Twelve years later, Blunt delved into a new genre – horror – and starred alongside her husband John Krasinski in “A Quiet Place,” which Krasinski also directed.

“I had never done horror films like this before and I never realized how exhausting it is to constantly be hyperventilating and scared,” she revealed.

Blunt said that when she watched Krasinski direct his first film, she discovered a new side of him.

“You see that your partner has a superpower that you didn’t know you had,” she enthused. “It was really extraordinary to build that together. It was really special.”
