Borussia Dortmund’s head coach Nuri Sahin is going into his first Champions League season as a coach with great ambitions. “The goal must be to get further,” said the 36-year-old Sahin before the preliminary round kick-off this evening at FC Bruges (9 p.m./DAZN). The motto must therefore be: “As far as possible.”

The previous assistant coach Sahin took over the BVB team from Edin Terzic, who had surprisingly led the Westphalians to the final of the Champions League against Real Madrid (0:2). “As a finalist, there is a responsibility towards the club and the competition,” said Sahin. “Borussia Dortmund is a brand in Europe. We want to live up to that.”

The former professional admitted that he had to get used to the new format with more games in table format. “It’s a bit of a journey into the unknown. “It’s only after two or three match days that things start to look a bit better,” said Sahin, but also added: “No team can really prepare for it.”
