RG Kar rape case: Junior Doctors Front sends emails to chief secretary, seeking meeting with Mamata Banerjee | 10 Updates

Junior doctors protesting against the murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday said they would continue their sit-in and would not return to duty even after state appointee Manoj Kumar Verma was appointed as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner, succeeding Vineet Goyal, fulfilling one of the protesters’ key demands. In response to their demands, the state government also sacked two senior health department officials.

Here are the ten most important updates:

1. The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front has sent another email to the West Bengal Chief Minister, requesting another meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as some demands are still pending, ANI reported.

3. Senior TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy on Tuesday announced that he had resigned as editor of the party publication ‘Jago Bangla’ (Wake up Bengali) citing personal reasons. He had recently attracted attention for supporting the junior doctors’ protests following the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

4. “I am leaving the post of Editor of Jago Bangla due to personal reasons as I am not able to discharge my post since I assumed office in 2022. It is not that I am being hampered in discharging my responsibilities. Someone else who can perform this role better should take over,” Roy said.

5. Earlier, IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma was appointed as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) of Kolkata after Vineet Kumar Goyal was removed from the post.

The Bengal chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday urged the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) to cancel the registration of Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI had arrested Ghosh on September 2 for alleged financial irregularities at the hospital. Following this, the WBMC issued summons to him on September 7, asking him to explain within three days why his medical registration should not be cancelled.

7. The father of the deceased doctor-student of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on Tuesday said that her daughter would still be alive if West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had taken action against former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandeep Ghosh in 2021.

8. “The CBI is doing its job, we cannot comment on it (the investigation)… Whoever is in any way connected with this murder or whoever was involved in tampering with evidence, all are being investigated… They (protesting junior doctors) are sitting here protesting in pain, they are like my children, it pains us to see them… The day the accused are punished will be our victory… In 2021 too, many allegations were made against former school principal Sandeep Ghosh; if the chief minister had taken action against Sandeep Ghosh, my daughter would be alive today,” the victim’s father told reporters.

9. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Tuesday observed that the CBI’s investigation is to bring out the absolute truth. The Supreme Court said it has gone through a status report filed by the CBI and that the central agency has responded to all the issues raised by the Supreme Court, including the post-mortem. The Supreme Court said the CBI will not sleep and must give time to bring out the truth. The Supreme Court also sought a status report on the investigation into the financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

10. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has refused to stop the live telecast of the proceedings on the ground that it is a matter of public interest. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal raised concerns over the live telecast and said that it has far-reaching implications. He clarified that he is not representing the accused but the state of West Bengal.
