Thierry Henry and former US star Mike Grella didn’t mince their words as they engaged in a heated debate live on air on Tuesday evening.

The two reported on AC Milan’s home game against Liverpool for CBS Sports. Henry was in the studio while Grella reported from the sidelines at San Siro.

The conversation turned to the current standard of Major League Soccer (MLS) following the recent appointment of new national coach Mauricio Pochettino, and Henry got straight to the point.

“I played in the MLS and I thought the American players in the MLS were better than the American players playing in the MLS now,” Henry said, before adding, “Answer that question” to Grella.

Micah Richards sensed the growing tension between the two and tried to smooth things over, but Henry persisted and reiterated that he had a clear opinion on the matter based on his previous experience in the league as a player for the New York Red Bulls.

Grella finally responded in a brutal way by telling Henry with a big grin on his face: “I know you played in the MLS, I replaced you!”

At this point, Jamie Carragher and Richards rose from their seats and pretended to walk away from the set, while presenter Kate Abdo covered her face as the situation became increasingly uncomfortable.

Henry didn’t want to hear any of it and replied sharply: “Stop it! You haven’t replaced me. You won’t win this argument.”

Carragher found his voice as he joked, “Mike, I think this is the end of your career at CBS!”

Grella took the joke well and quickly replied, “I don’t know if it would have led anywhere anyway, Jamie!”

Carragher and Richards hilariously snuck back to their seats to once again break the tension, but Henry was determined to get one final answer out of Grella.

Grella admitted that the best US players currently play in Europe, but that was still not good enough for Henry, who accused the American of “dodging the question”.

For the last time, he asked if the American players of his era were better than those of today, to which Grella reluctantly admitted: “Probably. The answer is probably.”

Finally, Henry got the answer he wanted and in the background you could hear Abdo breathing a sigh of relief as the awkward exchange came to an end.
