Harris calls for “civil dialogue”, Trump blames her rhetoric

Vice President Kamala Harris calls for a “civil dialogue” even as Republicans claim their own rhetoric played a role in the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

“Political violence of any kind is unacceptable and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms,” Harris said on Tuesday in Chiquibaby radio show. “I’m grateful that he’s OK, but we all need to stand up and say enough of this kind of behavior. We need to have a civil dialogue and discourse. We need to be able to discuss our differences.”

Harris appeared on the Spanish-language show, which is broadcast on more than 100 radio stations, to make her case to Hispanic voters, but her calls for civil dialogue are hypocritical, according to many Republicans, including Trump.

“The rhetoric, the lies, as exemplified by the false statements made by Comrade Kamala Harris during the rigged and highly partisan ABC debate, and all the ridiculous lawsuits specifically designed to harm Joe and then Kamala’s political opponent, ME, have taken politics in our country to a whole new level of hate, name-calling and distrust,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“Because of this communist left rhetoric the bullets are flying and it will only get worse!” he added.

Trump was unharmed while Ryan Wesley Routh hid with a rifle on Trump’s Florida golf course on Sunday afternoon and waited for him for several hours. The alleged assassination attempt, the second against Trump since July, was thwarted when Secret Service agents intervened.

In a post on X, Routh claimed, “Democracy is on the ballot, and we can’t lose,” repeating a phrase Harris used repeatedly during the campaign.

Others close to Trump argued similarly, saying that rhetoric accusing Trump of being a dictator or a threat to the nation would lead to violence.

“I expect he is safe,” Trump’s son Eric Trump said on Fox News. Hannity“This country expects democracy, and then I hear Kamala Harris say at a debate that this man over there, the bravest person I’ve ever met, is a threat to democracy? You know, Sean, bullets only fly in one direction. It’s really interesting how that works.”

Democrats called for better protection for Trump after the assassination, but most of them have not made any concrete commitment to toning down their political rhetoric.

President Joe Biden said Monday morning that the Secret Service needs more support after the second attack on Trump.

“One thing I want to make clear: The service needs more help. And I think Congress should respond to that need,” he told reporters.
