With iOS 18, Apple has also released a new maps update that brings us closer to nature – or rather, prevents us from finding ourselves in it. Users can now discover hikes in US national parks, create their own hiking routes, save favorite places, and much more.

Hikes in US national parks and topographic maps

For users in the US, Apple Maps now offers detailed information on thousands of hikes in national parks. From Acadia in Maine to Yosemite in California to Denali in Alaska, hikers can access comprehensive hiking information. You can filter hikes by route type, length and elevation, and use turn-by-turn navigation to stay on track. The ability to download hikes for offline use and sync them with Apple Watch is particularly useful.

Additionally, Apple Maps now offers topographic maps for the United States and Japan with contour lines, trail details, and other valuable information for hikers and outdoor adventurers.

Your own hiking routes and favorites

While some features are only available in certain regions, Apple has introduced custom hiking routes for users around the world. This new feature allows you to create and save personalized hiking and walking routes. Whether you’re exploring a new city or hiking in a local nature reserve, everyone can customize their routes to their liking and access them offline when synced with Apple Watch.

In addition to these features, Apple Maps now includes a new Places Library. This feature allows users to save favorite locations, curated map guides, national park hikes, and custom routes. Users can also add personal notes to each saved place to make it easier to remember and share experiences.

Improved search

The search experience in Apple Maps has been significantly improved. Users can now quickly discover and compare places by browsing photos, reviews, and price tiers without leaving the search interface. In addition, the updated “Search Here” button lets you search for points of interest such as restaurants, cafes, and gas stations in specific areas.

The new maps features are available for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia and watchOS 11.
