Leaks suggest that another 5 Pixel models will be released in 2025

Google’s Pixel 2024 launch was a little different than previous hardware events. For the first time, we saw a total of 5 new phones from Google in 2024, including the Pixels 8a in May, followed by the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL and the highly anticipated 9 Pro Fold a month ago in August. It was Google’s biggest smartphone deployment to date, and if the latest rumors are to be believed, it will likely continue in 2025.

A recent report from Android Headlines (via 9to5 Google) claims that Google is gearing up for another five-phone year in 2025. The usual suspects are all there – the Pixel 9a is set to be followed by the Pixel 10 family (including the Pro, Pro XL, and Pro Fold models). Here are all the new internal codenames to keep an eye on over the next 10-11 months:

  • Pixels 9a – ‘Tegu’
  • Pixels 10 – ‘Franklin’
  • Pixel 10 Pro – ‘Blazer’
  • Pixel 10 Pro – ‘Mustang’
  • Pixel 10 Pro Fold – ‘Rango’

The Pixel 9a’s “Tegu” codename is a continuation of the reptile theme we’ve seen in the Pixel 9 series (“Tokay,” “Caiman,” “Komodo”), while the Pixel 10 series seems to be going in a new thematic direction with a distinct horse theme.

However, there is a curiosity: the code name of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold: “Rango”. It’s a bit puzzling as it deviates from the horse theme and recalls the reptilian nomenclature of the previous generation (assuming there’s a connection to the movie). Rango). This could suggest that “Rango” is actually something else entirely – perhaps the larger Pixel 10 that has been rumored as early as 2022, or even the elusive Pixel Flip that many believe could still be in the works.

Regardless, these codenames give us a pretty clear picture of what we can expect from Google in 2025. Aside from the new phones, there are rumors of a revamped Pixel tablet and a major shift in Tensor chip production, moving from Samsung to a fully custom design with TSMC.

It seems that Google is showing no signs of slowing down with the Pixel range. While a total of 5 phones in a year feels like a lot, I’m happy to see that Google seems undeterred and more confident with the Pixel brand than ever before. And for good reason: I’m still absolutely thrilled with the Pixel 9 Pro XL and I bet many others are too. So for now, we’ll focus on this current, excellent range of new phones here while we wait for the new phones Google has in store for us this time next year.
