Huge update: FritzOS 8 released with more than 60 new features for Fritzbox, Mesh and more

Fritzbox users have been waiting for the big update with version number 8 for FritzOS for a long time. Today the time has finally come, because AVM announced in a press release that FritzOS 8 is now available for download.

With this free update, users receive more than 60 new features and improvements that affect not only the Fritzbox, but also mesh networks, smart home functions and more.

Easy setup

The update to FritzOS 8 makes setting up a new Fritzbox much easier. Every Fritzbox running the new version can be easily set up step by step using the MyFRITZ app on a smartphone or tablet.

The easiest way is to open the app and scan the QR code that comes with your new Fritzbox. A setup wizard will guide you through all the important points. This should make it easier for newcomers to use the app for the first time.

More security and control

Overall, FritzOS 8 is designed to increase the security and stability of all Fritz products and ensure a long service life. In line with this, AVM now also offers WireGuard VPN for IPv6 connections to protect data transmission. This allows you to set up secure connections, for example in the home office or when accessing your devices remotely.

In addition, you can track the utilization of the Internet connection in your network via a new online monitor. This also makes it easier to assign devices and optimize the data rate.

Improvements for Mesh

Through targeted improvements to the mesh overview, users with FritzOS 8 should be able to assign easily recognizable names and symbols to devices in the home network and the guest network. This makes operation easier. In addition, you can display further details about the connections between individual devices.

Improvements for Fritz Smart Home

Smart home users also receive some new features thanks to FritzOS 8. The smart home was recently renamed Fritzsmart and the new version offers the following options:

On the device page of the Fritzsmart Control 350 door-window contact in the Fritzbox user interface, the window open detection can now be set up for selected radiator controls.
New templates allow you to set the target temperature for radiator controls as well as adjust the brightness, saturation and color for lamps and the position of roller shutters in percentage increments.
The adjustable temperature for radiator controls can now be limited to a minimum and maximum temperature. Routines can also be triggered by a preset or astronomically specified time.

Who gets FritzOS 8?

FritzOS 8 is available today for the FritzBox 7590 AX. All other current Fritzboxes, repeaters and powerline products will receive the update gradually.

Users receive FritzOS 8 automatically when the auto-update function is activated or directly after clicking on “Start update” via the “fritz.box” user interface. Further information about all new features and improvements can be found at avm.de/fritzos.
