What happened?

On Monday, December 5, 2022, 14-year-old Ece and her 13-year-old friend are on their way to school in Ulm-Wiblingen. At around 7:30 a.m., the two girls are walking past a refugee shelter when they are approached by a man. Before the girls can react, the 27-year-old pulls out a knife and stabs the children. The 13-year-old friend manages to fly while Ece is stabbed. She dies of her serious injuries that same morning.

The perpetrator then attempts to take his own life in his apartment, but is arrested a short time later by the police special task force and taken to a military hospital.

Two days after the crime, on December 7, 2022, the funeral service for 14-year-old Ece will take place. More than 1,000 people will attend the emotional ceremony to say goodbye to the young girl.

What led to this cruel act? Who is responsible for this crime?

Who was the perpetrator?

The perpetrator, a 27-year-old man from Eritrea, was living in an asylum accommodation in Illerkirchberg at the time of the crime and had been in Germany for some time. At the time of the crime, he was under a lot of pressure because he did not have valid identification documents. According to his own statement, he was carrying a knife on the day of the crime in order to force a passport from the relevant immigration authorities. He feared that the two girls had discovered the knife in his jacket and could call the police.

During the trial, the man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Ece and the attempted murder of her friend. The court also found that the man’s guilt was particularly serious, which means that release after 15 years is almost impossible. The verdict is based on the finding that three characteristics of murder were met: treachery, the intention to facilitate and conceal another crime. It was also taken into account that the victims were very young. The court ruled out the man’s increased culpability.
