Football, NFL: Butker shoots the Kansas City Chiefs to victory

Second game, second win – but what Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs are showing in the early phase of the NFL season is not yet a confident performance.

Last action crowns wild game in Arrowhead

A lot of work was needed in temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius in Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium. The home team Chiefs had to fight hard against the Cincinnati Bengals until the wild 26:25 victory was secured. With the last action, kicker Harrison Butker sealed the second victory in the second game for the defending champions with a shot from 51 yards.

Five lead changes show that Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow are having an exciting battle this Sunday. Chiefs superstar Mahomes showed both ups and downs, only managing 151 passing yards with two touchdown passes (18/25) and throwing two interceptions. Burrow delivered brilliantly at times (28/36, 258 yards, two TDs).

“We’ve been in situations many times and we have full confidence,” Mahomes commented on the thriller afterwards. “No matter how the game goes, we do what we need to do to win. And that’s what we did today.” The offense, however, made “too many mistakes.” Somewhat unusually for the Chiefs, the running game kept the team in the game for long stretches, with Isaiah Pacheco gaining 90 yards.

And the defense: Chamarri Conner secured a 23-22 lead with a 38-yard fumble return at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Evan McPherson countered with a 53-yard FG to make it 25-23 for the Bengals, his fourth successful field goal of the game.

Anthony’s interference costs Bengals the win

A final push by the Chiefs put Butker in shooting position – helped by an interference penalty against Bengals safety Daijahn Anthony on a fourth down in the final minute. And so the Chiefs finally pulled themselves out of the noose and were up 2-0. Cincinnati fell behind 0-2.

The Chiefs, who are aiming for the “three-peat” this season, had already won the opening game against the ambitious Baltimore Ravens with great difficulty (27:20).

Murray and Harrison Jr. click – Texans at 2-0

In another late game, the Arizona Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Rams 41-10 and moved to 1-1 (Rams 0-2). Playmaker Kyler Murray set the course for victory in the first quarter – with two touchdown passes of 23 and 60 yards to rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. Right at the start of Q2, he added 18 yards to Elijah Higgins to make it 21-0, which was already decisive, and ended up with a total of 266 passing yards (17/21). His counterpart Matt Stafford came away empty-handed (19/27, 216 yards).

CJ Stroud (23/36, 260 yards, 1 TD) led the Houston Texans to their second win of the season in the Sunday Night Game, a 19:13 win over the Chicago Bears (1-1). While Bears QB Caleb Williams allowed himself two picks, Stroud managed a TD pass to Nico Collins over 28 yards to make it 10:3. After that, both teams only exchanged field goals.
