Kamala Harris on the second assassination attempt on Trump: “Glad he is safe”

Vice President Kamala Harris called for peace just hours after a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

“I have been informed of reports that shots were fired near former President Trump and his Florida estate and I am glad he is safe,” she posted on X. “Violence has no place in America.”

Trump survived another assassination attempt in two months on Sunday afternoon when the Secret Service shot a man at Trump International Golf Club who they suspected of possessing a gun. He was later stopped and taken into custody by Martin County police officers.

Statements and reactions came from both sides of the aisle in Washington. The White House said Harris and President Joe Biden had been informed of the incident.

“The President and Vice President have been briefed on the security incident at Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was playing golf,” the White House statement said. “They are relieved to know he is safe. Their team will provide regular updates.”

Senator JD Vance (R-OH), Trump’s running mate, said he spoke with Trump before news of the shooting was announced.

“I’m glad President Trump is safe. I spoke to him before the news broke and he was surprisingly in good spirits,” Vance posted on X. “We still don’t know much, but I’m going to give my kids an extra big hug tonight and say a prayer of thanks.”

Governor Tim Walz (D-MN), Harris’ running mate, sent his best wishes to Trump.

“Gwen and I are glad to hear that Donald Trump is safe,” he said. “Violence has no place in our country. It is not what defines us as a nation.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he had been briefed by the Secret Service.

“I applaud the Secret Service’s swift response to ensure former President Trump’s safety,” he said. “There is no place for political violence of any kind in this country. The perpetrator must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Former President Barack Obama retweeted Harris’ post and later posted about a golf tournament in Virginia, a move that sparked some controversy online.

Trump himself released a statement saying: “Nothing will stop me.”

“There was a shooting near me, but before the rumor mill gets out of control, I want you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND I AM FINE. Nothing will stop me. I will NEVER SURRENDER!” he wrote in an email sent by the campaign.

The suspect was identified as Ryan Wesley Routh.

During an evening press conference, authorities said they found several items in the bushes where the suspect was spotted, including an AK-47 rifle with a scope, two backpacks hanging on the fence with ceramic tiles inside and a GoPro camera that he apparently wanted to use to film.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said Trump still does not have full perimeter protection because he is not the president, but if he is elected, protections will be increased even further.
