The CBI arrested Abhijit Mondal for allegedly obstructing the investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. CNN-News18 has accessed his arrest warrant.

A remand letter issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Kolkata rape and murder case has revealed that former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh did not want to get a First Information Report (FIR) registered in the case. Another remand letter has revealed that arrested Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mondal tried to divert the investigation in the case.

Mondal was arrested by the CBI on Saturday for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

The hospital is under the control of Tala police station.

Mondal was arrested after he failed to give satisfactory answers to the CBI officials. He was later interrogated by the CBI officials for several hours at their CGO Complex office in Kolkata.

The police officer was arrested on charges of destruction of evidence and other charges, an official told news agency PTI, adding that Mondal was also accused of delaying the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) in the case.

Now CNN-News18 has exclusive access to the Station House Officer’s arrest warrant issued by the CBI.

What Abhijit Mondal’s remand letter says

“Abhijit Mondal, along with other likely accused, has formed a criminal conspiracy by screening Sanjoy Roy (the main accused) and others in an attempt to divert the investigation,” the remand letter said.

“Mondal arrived at the crime scene at 11 am, an hour after receiving the information about the crime, and deliberately stated a case of unnatural death, deliberately mentioning false facts,” it said.

The CBI also alleged that Mondal was in cahoots with the hospital administration.

“Mondal failed to secure the crime scene in an attempt to protect Sanjoy Roy. His actions compromised important information. He deliberately delayed the registration of the FIR despite receiving information about the incident at 10:03 am on August 9. The FIR was registered only at 11:30 pm on the same day despite the family giving the go-ahead at 7:30 pm,” the remand letter said.

“Mondal did not film the process of sealing the evidence and biological samples as required by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). He allowed a hasty cremation of the doctor despite the family’s demands for a second autopsy,” it said.

“Abhijit Mondal caused a delay of two days in recovering the clothes of Sanjoy Roy which he was wearing on the day of the crime,” the letter said.

SANDIP GHOSH’s remand letter

CNN-News18 also has exclusive access to Sandip Ghosh’s arrest warrant.

The note mentioned that the CBI had informed the court about the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) report on the lie detector test, which alleged that Sandip Ghosh had deliberately misled the investigators on important issues.

“Ghosh had no intention of filing an FIR in this case even after consulting a lawyer,” the letter said.

“Even after being informed about the incident at 9.58 am on August 9, he did not reach the hospital immediately. He did not file a murder complaint, which was eventually filed by the vice principal, who floated a theory of the doctor’s suicide,” it said.

The remand letter also states, “Sandip Ghosh was in contact with Mondal since 10:03 am. However, he tried to downplay the incident, which led to destruction of evidence.”

Rape and murder case in Calcutta

A total of three people have been arrested in connection with this case so far.

The incident sparked violent protests across the country, particularly in West Bengal, where doctors called on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to give in to their demands.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and local communities also protested against the incident and demanded the arrest of all those involved and better safety laws for women.
