Second win of the season for Oscar Piastri!

The McLaren driver wins the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Australian, who has already triumphed in Hungary, wins in Baku ahead of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and George Russell (Mercedes). World champion Max Verstappen (RedBull) finished fifth, losing some of his lead over his World Championship rival Lando Norris (McLaren). He drove from 15th place on the grid to fourth place, now 59 points behind Verstappen. McLaren even takes the lead in the Constructors’ Championship!

Lando Norris makes a mistake in qualifying

After a driving error, the World Championship runner-up was eliminated in 17th place after the first knockout round of qualifying. The battle for pole position in Baku took place without Norris. Ferrari star Charles Leclerc secured first place on the fast street circuit on the Caspian Sea, ahead of his teammate Carlos Sainz. Oscar Piastri showed what Norris could have achieved in the second McLaren: the Australian drove his Papay car to third place, ahead of Mercedes man George Russell.

World Championship leader Verstappen is just lagging behind, as he has been recently: No more than 6th place in the sandwich between teammate Sergio Perez and record world champion Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was possible. Thanks to rival Norris’ mistake, Verstappen can still hope to limit the damage in Sunday’s race. He may even be able to rebuild his lead of 62nd place over Norris in the overall standings. From Norris’ point of view, this is the worst-case scenario.

Bitter: Alpine pilot Pierre Gasly (28) has to start from last place in Baku. The reason is a technical rule violation.
