Woman finds human tooth in supermarket pastry; investigations ongoing

A 30-year-old woman allegedly found a human tooth in a 355 (30 yuan) meat-filled mooncake that she bought at a supermarket in China. According to media reports, the woman posted a video on Douyin describing the discovery of a tooth in a mooncake that she bought at Sam’s Club in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province.

US supermarket giant Sam’s Club said it was investigating the case.

A moon cake is a traditional Chinese pastry closely associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival, a celebration of the moon and the harvest. Typically round to symbolize the full moon, these pastries consist of a thick, delicate dough skin encasing a sweet or savory filling.

According to the reports, the woman claimed, citing the video, that the tooth did not belong to anyone in her family. She also said that she reported the incident to the police.

An employee at Sam’s Club in Changzhou confirmed that the company is investigating the incident. Chinese news agency Hongxing News quoted the mooncake maker as saying it was “impossible to mix a tooth into the meat filling.”

According to the South China Morning PostA spokesman for the manufacturing company known by the surname “Liu” explained that the meat is minced and examined with an X-ray system that can detect pieces of bone.

Liu mentioned that such incidents have not occurred for more than 10 years. The company has forwarded security footage to Sam’s Club and the Changzhou Market Regulatory Authority for analysis. The relevant government agency has also confirmed that it is investigating the case.

A similar incident was reported earlier this year in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. A woman named Mayadevi Gupta allegedly found four dentures in a chocolate that she had received at a child’s birthday party.
