Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from Davis Cup 2024 and takes a break from tennis

Spain’s young tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has reportedly withdrawn from the 2024 Davis Cup and decided to take a break from tennis. Alcaraz recently represented his country in the Davis Cup. He played a crucial role in Spain’s victory against France and advancement to the round of eight. According to a report by the Daily Express, citing Spanish newspaper Marca, the current world number three has decided to withdraw from the competition and take a break from professional tennis.

It is not yet clear whether the Spaniard will return to play for Spain in the remaining Davis Cup matches. After his last win against Ugo Humbert, the youngster admitted he had struggled to cope with expectations: “There are times when I smile because I force myself to, even when I don’t feel like it,” he said. “Sometimes it works and changes the dynamic, but sometimes it doesn’t. At the US Open I forced myself to smile, but it didn’t work. This week it helped me both mentally and tennis-wise, I realized a lot of things.”

Alcaraz has had a fabulous time on the tennis court this season. The former world number one has won two of four Grand Slam tournaments. First, he won the French Open after defeating current world number two Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in the final. Alcaraz then claimed the Wimbledon title after defeating Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 in the final, as well as a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. In the singles final, he lost to Djokovic in straight sets 7-6, 7-6.
