Former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, who was in custody for financial irregularities, was arrested in a rape-murder case

RG Kar rape and murder case: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh in connection with the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor. Abhijit Mondal, officer-in-charge of Tala police station, was also arrested by the CBI.

Earlier, Sandip Ghosh was arrested by the Central Investigation Agency in a financial irregularities case. After his arrest in the Calcutta doctor’s rape and murder case, the junior doctors who had demanded his arrest celebrated at the protest site.

Demanding the CBI to arrest those who tampered with the evidence, a junior doctor said, “We have demanded the arrest of former principal of the college Sandip Ghosh and officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal for their involvement in tampering with the evidence. We are very happy that the CBI has arrested them. The CBI should also arrest others who tampered with the evidence.”

“Today’s arrests are very important”: Bengali BJP

Commenting on the arrest of former school principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mondal by the CBI, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said, “Today’s arrests are very important. Especially the arrest of Tala police station in-charge… He was arrested for tampering in a rape and murder case. The people of West Bengal have been demanding his arrest for a long time.”

He also claimed that the head of the Tala police station must have received orders “from above” to tamper with evidence.

The Bengal BJP leader also demanded the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. “My question is, can the in-charge of a small station take such a decision? He must have received instructions from above… Of course, the people at the top should be arrested… Vineet Goyal should resign immediately, otherwise the people of West Bengal will remove the Chief Minister from his post,” Majumdar said.

Abhijit Mondal was later taken to BR Singh Hospital in Kolkata for a medical examination.
