Berríos wins seventh straight start, Guerrero scores his 500th RBI, Blue Jays beat Cardinals 7-2

TORONTO– José Berríos threw seven strong innings to win his seventh straight start, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. scored his 500th career run and scored twice and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 on Saturday.

Guerrero, 25, is the youngest player in Blue Jays history to reach 500 RBIs. Davis Schneider hit 3 for 4 with a home run and struck out two as Toronto earned its second straight victory.

Addison Barger had two hits and an RBI and Alejandro Kirk scored two runs as the Blue Jays handed the Cardinals their first series loss to an AL East opponent in over two years.

Berríos allowed one run and two hits, walked two and had four strikeouts. He is 3-0 in five career starts against St. Louis.

Ryan Burr played the eighth inning and Luis Frías finished the game for Toronto.

Jordan Walker hit a solo home run for the Cardinals, his third of the season. St. Louis finished 9-4 against AL East opponents. Their last series loss to an AL East team came in June 2022, when they lost two of three games in Boston.

Walker opened the scoring with a two-out home run in the third inning, but Schneider tied it by hitting a single in the bottom half against Cardinals right-hander Kyle Gibson for his 11th home run and first since June 22.

Toronto chased Gibson and took a four-run lead with a sixth run. Gibson was eliminated after shortstop Masyn Winns’ throwing error on Ernie Clements’ grounder with the bases loaded allowed the game-winning run.

Ryan Fernandez came in and allowed Kirk’s RBI groundout and run-scoring singles from Barger and Schneider.

Gibson (8-7) allowed five runs – one earned – and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He had three walks and one strikeout.
