Darts: Kevin Troppmann completes the double at the NEXT GEN 17

Darts: Kevin Troppmann completes the double at the NEXT GEN 17

After Kevin Troppmann had already won the overall victory at NEXT GEN 16, he went one better on Saturday at NEXT GEN 17 and took the overall victory again. He clearly defeated Patrick Klingelhöfer 5-2 in the final.

The NEXT GEN 17 started with 47 players in a group phase that was played in round robin and in the best of 5 legs format with the double in/double out mode. The best 32 players moved into the final round. Here the double in/double out mode was still used, but now in the knockout system, with the best of 7 legs format being decisive for a win in the first four rounds. For the semi-finals and the final, the format increased to best of 9 legs.

On his way to the final, Troppmann defeated Michael Weinzettl 4-1 in the first round of the knockout phase and Maximilian Nirschl 4-1 in the round of 16. In the round of the last eight, Troppmann faced Franz Rötzsch. But even the Destroyer could not stop Troppmann, who won the match 4-1. A 5-3 victory over David Jeske allowed Troppmann to advance to the final.

Klingelhöfer defeated Thomas Scheirer 4-0 in the first round of the knockout phase before knocking out Marcel Erba 4-2. In the quarterfinals he beat Christopher Toonders 4-2 and in the semifinals Klingelhöfer defeated Leon Weber in the decider.

Troppmann got off to a weak start in the final match. In the first two innings he was unable to hit the double needed to start, but Klingelhöfer was in the game straight away. From the third inning onwards, however, Troppmann stepped on the gas. With throws of 120, 139 and 91, he was just ahead of Klingelhöfer in the finish area and Troppmann managed to get his throw through in a total of 20 darts.

A break in 16 darts allowed Troppmann to move 2-0 ahead and in the third leg he started perfectly with 160 points to make the score 3-0 with an 18-darter.

Only then did Klingelhöfer get on the scoreboard after he managed to get his throw through in 15 darts. A break in 19 darts brought Klingelhöfer to 3-2, but Troppmann regained the break thanks to a beautiful 160 high finish in 12 darts and restored the old lead at 4-2.

Now Troppmann threw for the match win. After a total of four shots he was comfortably in the finish area with 60 points remaining, but he didn’t want to fall at the doubles that were always there when entering the leg. However, as Klingelhöfer only reached the finish area after 18 darts, Troppmann was under no pressure and was able to celebrate his second tournament victory in a row with a 19-darter.

NEXT GEN consists of 18 tournaments that are played in Austria and Germany and organized by PDC Europe. Anyone who is 16 years or older, does not have a PDC Tour Card and is a German, Austrian, Swiss, Luxembourg or Liechtenstein citizen may take part.

Prize money of 5,200 euros will be distributed per tournament, with this sum including bonus payments for 12-darters or better, 171+ shots and high finishes of 101+.

In addition to the prize money, players can look forward to starting places in the Europe Super League and thus the opportunity to take part in the Darts World Cup, the Q-School and the European Tour Qualifier. They can also earn the right to play a match at a PDC Europe Darts Gala.

The next tournament of the NEXT GEN Circuit will take place on Sunday 15 September, with selected matches from the knockout phase as well as both semi-final matches and the final being available to watch live on the PDC Europe YouTube channel.
