A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of a teenager on Oak Mountain Road on Sept. 8, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said, but he is not charged with murder.

On Friday, September 13, at approximately 3:55 p.m., investigators arrested Adrian Nicholas Romero-Mandujano in connection with the double shooting that injured another victim, but he is not charged with the actual murder.

One of the victims, 19-year-old Rafael Varela Angeles, later succumbed to his injuries while being treated at Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte.

Romero-Mandujano was charged with destruction of evidence for fleeing the scene with an AR-15 rifle and a pistol. After his arrest, he was released on $2,500 bail.

The shooting was reported at around 8:53 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, during a cancer fundraiser at an outdoor event center on Oak Mountain.

Officers found Angeles lying on the ground with a gunshot wound while other bystanders rendered aid to him. One officer, a former firefighter and paramedic, began life-saving aid to Angeles and he was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Charlotte, but did not survive.

Once on scene, officers learned that there was another victim who had been transported by a private citizen.
