Thane, Sept 14 (PTI) – A couple have been booked for cheating a builder of Rs 12 crore in a dispute over the redevelopment of a housing colony in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Saturday.

Acting on a complaint from the builder, the Kalyan police on Thursday registered a case under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code against Srikant Pai and his wife, advocate Divya, an official said.

The accused allegedly extorted money from the plaintiff by promising to obtain permits and clearance certificates from the apartment owners for the reconstruction of a residential complex and to withdraw lawsuits he had filed against other tenants, the official said.

The duo also allegedly sold apartments using forged documents, causing significant delays and financial damage to the project, he said.

An investigation has been launched and no arrests have been made in the case, the official said. PTI COR ARU
