Incessant rain in Agra leaves the garden of the Taj Mahal flooded, water penetrates the main dome

Agra: The main dome of the Taj Mahal developed a water leak due to incessant rains for the past three days, inundating a garden on the premises. The alleged video of the flooded garden on the premises of the Taj Mahal went viral on Thursday, grabbing the attention of tourists.

However, a senior official of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in Agra district said that there were leaks in the main dome due to water ingress and no damage was caused.

Speaking about the leak in the main dome of the Taj Mahal, Rajkumar Patel, director of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Agra district, told PTI, “Yes, we have seen the leak in the main dome of the Taj Mahal. Then when we checked it, it was due to a leak and there was no damage to the main dome. We checked the main dome using a drone camera.”

On Thursday evening, an alleged 20-second video showing one of the monument’s gardens under rainwater circulated online. It caught the attention of tourists visiting the Taj Mahal and many shot a video of it.

A local resident, who works as a government-certified tourist guide, said the Taj Mahal is the pride of Agra and the entire nation, adding that it provides employment to hundreds of locals and people involved in the tourism industry.

“The monument needs to be maintained with utmost care because it is the only hope for people in the tourism industry,” said Monika Sharma, a government-certified tour guide.

Agra has been experiencing continuous rain for the past three days, resulting in waterlogging in most parts of the city.

One of the national highways was clogged with rainwater, fields were flooded and the upscale areas of the city experienced water intrusion due to the persistent rain.

The Agra city administration has ordered the closure of all schools due to rain.
