Sophia Akuffo, distinguished fellow of the institute and former Supreme Court judge, said the debates would provide a clear understanding of the candidates’ policies.

The NDC campaign also accused the IEA of attempting to manipulate the electoral process in favor of the incumbent party.

How many presidential candidates are there?

The Election Commission had previously stated that 39 candidates had collected nomination forms for the election.

The candidates included representatives of twelve political parties and 27 independent candidates.

It remains to be seen how many candidates will be eligible to contest after aspirants begin submitting their nomination forms.

Criticism of the IEA debate

The office of National Democratic Congress Chairman John Mahama criticized the IEA for the debate plans.

The office said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) expected to be consulted on any debate plans.

Bawumia attacks Mahama’s record in northern Ghana

YEN.com.gh reported that the Chairman and Vice President of the New Patriotic Party (NDC), Mahamudu Bawumia, criticised former President Mahama’s track record in the North.

Bawumia claimed that he had succeeded in promoting the development of the north despite never having been president.

In the 2024 election, the frontrunners in the race will come from northern Ghana for the first time.
