At first, walking football was met with a weary smile in England. Today, there are over a thousand teams there. Now walking football is set to become established in Switzerland. A tournament is taking place in Basel on Friday.

When walking football was first reported in the English media, many thought it was an April Fool’s joke. There are now over 1,000 teams in England, 19 national associations are represented in the international umbrella organization, there are international matches and you can even hear sentences like: “It gives me a second chance to play something I’ve always loved” (Bruce Loudon, Birmingham Walking FC) or “It changed my life” (Frank Carmichael, Wigan Walkers FC).
