Most smartphones can receive messages via cell broadcast. But does this also apply to smartwatches?

Whether your smartwatch receives the alert on the alert day depends heavily on the connection to your smartphone. Typically, smartwatches are designed to mirror most notifications from the connected smartphone. This means that your watch can receive an alert if your smartphone receives the alert via cell broadcast or alert apps like NINA and forwards it to the smartwatch.

What happens when the smartphone is turned off?

If your smartphone is turned off or has no reception during the warning, the smartwatch will not receive a warning message in most cases. The reason is that smartwatches without an active connection to the mobile network or smartphone are generally unable to receive independent warning messages.

However, there are exceptions: Some LTE-enabled smartwatches with their own cellular reception could theoretically receive the alert directly, provided that the watch supports cell broadcast technology. This varies depending on the model and provider. I doubt that you can check in the watch’s settings whether alerts can be received. You can also turn them off there if you want to prevent the alarm from suddenly going off when the time comes.

Conclusion: Does the warning message appear on the smartwatch?

In most cases, the alert will appear on your smartwatch on the day of the alert if it is connected to a smartphone that displays the alert. However, smartwatches are unlikely to receive the alert directly because they are LTE-enabled and support cell broadcast.
