Middle schools on South Dakota’s west coast targeted by shooting threats on social media

Middle schools on South Dakota’s west coast targeted by shooting threats on social media

The West Shore School District will resume classes as usual Thursday morning after several middle schools in the district were targeted by online threats.

The district said in a message to families that it was aware of Snapchat messages threatening a “shooting” at Allen Middle School and New Cumberland Middle School on Thursday morning. In a second update, the district said it was also aware of “allegations regarding Crossroads Middle School.”

“At this time, we can say that this appears to be an ongoing problem in several districts across the Commonwealth, not just the West Shore School District,” said Todd Stoltz, superintendent of the West Shore School District. “We recognize that any threat to a school is concerning. Our goal is to inform families and avoid unnecessary worry.”

The district is working with police from Lower Allen Township, Fairview Township and New Cumberland in the investigation.

“At this time, we do not believe it is necessary to change our normal schedule for Thursday, September 12,” Stoltz wrote in the update. “If that changes, we will notify students, staff and families in the morning prior to AM bus routes.”

Anyone with information about the threat is asked to contact police or use the Safe2Say app.
