Empty – It won’t be long now before the city of Leer will once again be able to take a quick visit to Japan as part of Manga Day. The event will take place on Saturday, September 21st, and there will be a lot on offer, from free manga to a “Dragon Ball Rally” and a cosplay competition. Judith Münch, branch manager at Thalia in Leer’s city center, and Rocco La Rocca, theater manager at the Leer cinema, are hoping for great interest and regular participation, just like last year.

Offers at Thalia

The day begins at 9:30 a.m. with a free manga campaign at Thalia (while supplies last). “We have many different manga to choose from,” said Münch in an interview with our editorial team. And anyone who wants to try out what it’s like to create manga art for themselves can take part in a free drawing workshop from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. As last year, this will be run by #magicalusaya. Do you need to bring anything with you? “Just a good mood and fun drawing,” Thalia informs.

Another highlight in the bookstore is the “Dragon Ball Rally,” which will be held throughout the day. Dragon Balls will be hidden in the store, which must be found and then form the solution word. “Whoever guesses the word can look forward to a small gift,” says Münch. The promotional day at Thalia will be rounded off with a discount campaign for merchandise and Asian sweets.

What’s happening in the cinema

In the late afternoon, the red carpet will be rolled out in front of the cinema and cosplayers can show off their great outfits on the catwalk from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This will be followed by a cosplay competition. “So far, 19 participants have registered with us online,” said La Rocca, pointing out that there are a few new features in the competition this year. For example, cosplayers can still qualify for the competition on the catwalk. “This means that even those who drop by spontaneously have a chance of taking part,” explained La Rocca and Münch. At 6 p.m., it will be announced who is part of the party in the competition and those who then have to portray their character as part of a performance. “This will then be judged by a jury and the audience, with points being awarded,” said La Rocca. At the end, there will be a top 10 ranking, with various prizes to be won. These include high-quality headphones, cinema tickets and manga merchandise.

The Manga Day will be rounded off by various stands set up in the cinema from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the sale of cinema posters and displays of various films for a good cause and a film screening at 8 p.m. A real classic from Studio Ghibli will be shown: Spirited Away. Anyone who wants to see the Oscar-winning film should not hesitate. Because, as La Rocca said, some tickets have already been sold in advance.
