NFL, News: Tyreek Hill admits mistakes during police check

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins has once again spoken out about his brief arrest during a police check shortly before the game in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 31-year-old was pushed to the ground by police officers and handcuffed, and the body camera footage caused massive criticism.

“I have to say that I could have behaved better,” Hill said on Wednesday. “I should have left my disc down at that moment.” He didn’t want to attract attention. “I have to follow the rules. Do what everyone else would do.”

But that does not excuse the officers’ actions: “Does that give them the right to beat me? Absolutely not.” The released footage “shocked” him: “What would she have done if the body cameras hadn’t been there?”

On Tuesday, Hill publicly called for one of the police officers to be fired through his lawyer. He reiterated this a day later: “He has to go. Not only did he treat me badly, he also treated my teammates disrespectfully.” Two Dolphins players stopped to support Hill, and one of them was also briefly handcuffed. “What did they do wrong?” asks Hill. “They were just on the sidewalk.”

Hill said he would not protest or join the “defund the police” movement. He said he wanted to become a day-to-day police officer. But like in football, you have to evaluate the footage and learn from it.
