Gunfire exchanged between police and teenager who shot a woman holding a 2-year-old child in a Kennedale home

Gunfire exchanged between police and teenager who shot a woman holding a 2-year-old child in a Kennedale home

A teenager is facing multiple criminal charges after she allegedly shot a family member who was holding a toddler in her arms at a Kennedale apartment early Wednesday morning and then exchanged gunfire with police.

At around 12:45 a.m., officers conducted a welfare check at the Alta Landing Apartments in the 3100 block of Joplin Road, near U.S. 278, after a “desperate” 17-year-old called police and threatened to shoot other people in the apartment, a news release said.

When officers arrived, they saw an elderly woman and a two-year-old child on the apartment’s balcony and could hear “a commotion” inside. Officers ordered them to leave the house and come downstairs, police said.

As they walked down the stairs, the woman holding the child was shot in the back, the press release said.

While officers tried to get the victims out of the apartment, the 17-year-old shot them several times with a shotgun and the officers returned fire, police said.

The teenager was not hit, but stopped shooting.

The police pulled the victims out of the apartment and closed the door before taking cover outside. A short time later, the teenager came out of the apartment with her hands raised and was arrested.

The teenager, whose identity has not been publicly released, was booked into Everman Jail and faces one count of attempted capital murder, two counts of aggravated assault on a family member with a weapon and three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer with a weapon, the news release said.

The shooting victim was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, police said. Kennedale Police Chief Mike Holguin told KDFW-TV (Channel 4) that the victim was the suspect’s grandmother.

All officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave pending the completion of the internal investigation, according to department protocol.

Police said early Wednesday that the identities of those involved would be released at a later date.
