Troubleshooting Windows 11

These security updates were manageable in September under Windows 11. Problems with the Windows Installer were fixed. They led to errors in connection with the user account control. It also happened that the connections with Bluetooth headphones were unstable. This problem is also a thing of the past with the update.

The new update also includes quality improvements to the Windows 11 servicing stack. This component is responsible for installing Windows updates. The improvement ensures that updates from Microsoft are received on your devices in a stable and reliable manner.

With the patch day, Microsoft also points out the upcoming adjustments to Home and Pro editions of Windows 11. In addition, version 22H2 will only receive security updates from October 8, 2024. We therefore recommend that you update to the latest version.

Manageable improvements for Windows 10

The change is similar for Windows 10. The update contains quality and security improvements for the operating system. The problem with user account control has also been resolved here. Most of the bug fixes are available for Windows 10 version 1809.

The printer connection and the Remote Desktop application caused problems. The new update provides a solution. There were also difficulties transferring drives from new to older versions. These can now be decrypted again with BitLocker.

Closing security gaps

In the last six months, both Windows 11 and Windows 10 have been plagued by serious vulnerabilities, some of which were actively exploited by hackers. Patchday is particularly important for closing these gaps. By installing the updates, you are safe from cyberattacks.

With the September Patch Day, there are no significant vulnerabilities for the first time in 2024. Although security issues were also resolved this month, they are not classified as critical threats.

As always, Microsoft points out that Windows devices will receive the new features at different times. Since these are also rolled out gradually, it may take some time before you see the change.

Windows Patch Day

If you are not sure which version of Windows you are using, you can easily find out your Windows version and build number.

How to install the updates

If you use Windows 10 or Windows 11, you usually receive the updates automatically. They are installed when they are available and the next time you start the system – provided you have not deactivated or paused the automated update in Windows.

If you want to check the Microsoft servers yourself for available updates, you can find out how to install Windows updates manually in the following linked instructions.

Windows Patch Day: Which versions of Windows receive updates?

Windows 10 Home and Pro receive 18 months of support on a new major version after the release of this version. Users of the Enterprise and Education versions, however, receive 30 months. This means that these systems still receive all important security updates. However, it is recommended to switch to Windows 10 in good time. An update to Windows 11 is also possible from here.

Windows 8.1 will no longer receive extended support as of January 10, 2023. For Windows 7, the end came with the patch day in January 2020. Microsoft will no longer provide updates for the operating system for private users. The same fate befell Windows 10 in system version 2004 with the December 2021 patch day. The system version Windows 11 21H2 reached the end of its life with the patch on October 10, 2023.

The easiest way to install a new system update is to use the Windows Update function. Follow the path “Start” > “Settings” > “Update and Security” > “Windows Update” > “Check for updates”. Since Microsoft rolls out the updates in waves, you may not receive a system update until later.

The next date for the Microsoft Patchday 2024

Every second Tuesday of the month, Microsoft rolls out these security updates for Windows and its programs. Below you will find all the dates for 2024:

  • 08 October 2024
  • 12 November 2024
  • December 10, 2024

However, please note that due to the time difference in Germany, updates are only distributed late in the evening. The time frame may also be different for very urgent updates. Furthermore, these patches contain the updates from the most recent updates if they have not yet been installed. Security-relevant updates are optionally available to you at the end of the month.

Cancel or undo Windows updates

If the installation of a Windows update comes at an inconvenient time, the system offers you the option of pausing or canceling an update. You can find out how to cancel an ongoing update in the linked instructions. If the update has already been installed and there are problems, it helps to undo the update.
