Disney+: How to install the app on smart TVs and stream series and films

HOW DO I STREAM VIDEOS?

Like Netflix and Amazon Prime, you can also install Disney+ on your Smart TV. We’ll tell you which other devices you can use to stream with the provider.

Disney+ offers its subscribers a variety of hit series such as “The Bear” or top films from Marvel, Star Wars, Disney and Pixar. What’s more, you can watch the numerous contents on different devices.

The quality is usually much better on the TV than on a cell phone or laptop, not to mention the larger screen. And there’s something cozy about streaming your favorite series and films while relaxing on the sofa. There are several ways to watch Disney+ on your smart TV.

  1. Watch Disney+ directly on your Smart TV

  2. Apple TV with Disney+ app

  3. Special receiver

  4. Watch Disney+ via TV sticks

  5. Disney entertainment with Chromecast

  6. Watch Disney+ on game consoles

  7. HDMI cable as an alternative

Important information

For all of the options mentioned, your devices require a constant internet connection.

Watch Disney+ directly on your Smart TV

A smart TV usually has numerous apps for streaming providers and media libraries available. However, a modern TV is no guarantee that you will be able to download Disney+. On Samsung devices, for example, you can only use the app from the K series (2016) onwards. Therefore, find out which services your desired TV is compatible with before you buy it.

Basically, Disney+ works on LG devices with WebOS version (2016 or newer), Grundig TVs with Fire TV Edition and devices that use Android TV version 5.0 or higher.

Downloading the Disney+ app and then signing up is easy. If it is not already pre-installed, you can easily download it from your device’s app store. Then open Disney+, follow the on-screen instructions and enter your details or register with Disney+.

Apple TV with Disney+ app

Even if you have an Apple TV, you can still enjoy Disney+ on the big screen. Simply download the app from the App Store. However, you will need a fourth generation device or higher. If necessary, you can use the Airplay function on your third generation Apple TV to stream Disney+ from your iPhone or Mac to your TV.

Disney+ in review
Offer and functions in check

Disney+ has already made a name for itself with Marvel and Disney productions since 2020. Find out whether the family streaming service can hold its own in our test.

Special receiver

Popular receivers that offer you access to both TV programs and streaming services, for example, come from Sky Q, such as the Sky Q Receiver or the MagentaTV Receiver from MagentaTV.

You can only use such receivers if you are a Telekom customer. You have to pay a monthly rental fee for the device or you can buy it directly. Telekom also advertises an offer for Disney+. Please note that you will then be signing a contract with Telekom and not Disney+. This can be important in the event of cancellation.

You already pay the rental fee for the Sky Q receiver in your subscription. You can usually find the Disney+ app in the device’s start menu under “Apps”.

Watch Disney+ via TV sticks

Disney+ is also available on Fire TV Stick.

An Amazon Fire TV Stick or MagentaTV Stick also turns older TVs into Smart TVs. In addition to many other apps from streaming providers, you can also access Disney+ with these TV sticks.

The application should be suggested to you in the start menu under “Apps”. Otherwise, you can use the search function in the app menu. Once you have found the app, simply download Disney+ and log in with your login details.

Disney entertainment with Chromecast

Google Chromecast works in a similar way to a TV stick. You connect the device to the TV and control the content with an Android smartphone or tablet. The devices must be on the same WiFi network for this to work.

Simply start the Disney+ app on your smartphone or tablet and select a film or series. Then tap the cast symbol (screen with three quarter circles at the bottom left) at the top right or bottom left and select your TV from the available devices. The process also works on the computer if you run Disney+ in the Google Chrome browser.

Watch Disney+ on game consoles

The game consoles from Sony and Microsoft are now fully equipped multimedia systems. You can download the Disney+ app for free from the devices’ online stores. If you are on the PlayStation 4 home screen, you will find the app under “TV & Video”. To access Disney+ on the PlayStation 5, you have to select “Media” on the home screen, then go to “All Apps” and then click on “Video & Music Apps”.

It works similarly on the Microsoft consoles Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. On the home screen you will find the “My games and applications” section. Select this and then go to “Applications”. There you will find the Disney+ app.

HDMI cable as an alternative

If you don’t have a smart TV or a receiver or TV stick, you can still watch Disney+ on your TV. Simply connect your Windows laptop or MacBook to your TV using an HDMI cable. You usually don’t need to make many adjustments. Start Disney+ as usual via your browser and play the content on your TV.
