Increase in criminal gangs using holiday parks in North Wales

Increase in criminal gangs using holiday parks in North Wales

This is due to concerns about the increasing number of criminals renting out caravans and cabins in rural and remote holiday areas across the region to hide drugs, weapons and other illegal goods.

These areas are often targeted by criminals because they know that the influx of visitors and reduced police presence will serve as a cover for their activities.

Radio spots are being broadcast across North Wales urging the public to contact Crimestoppers anonymously if they have any information about suspicious activity or behaviour at campsites and holiday parks.

This could include:

  • Vehicles often come and go at unusual times
  • Caravans/cabins that seem to have many visitors for short periods of time
  • Large amounts of cash or other valuables are moved

Hayley Fry, Crimestoppers National Manager for Wales, said: “Dangerous criminals hope to hide in plain sight, taking advantage of the peaceful isolation of North Wales’ holiday parks. This threatens the safety and wellbeing of local communities and the many families seeking a relaxing and safe holiday.”

“We know that some criminals will intimidate and silence people. Please don’t let fear stop you from reporting the crime. By working together and speaking openly about what we see, we can all be eyes and ears in these more remote places.

“Crimestoppers ensures that no personal details are ever requested or collected. The charity passes relevant information directly to the police, who will investigate on your behalf.”

She added: “Millions of people have put their trust in Crimestoppers over the years and we are grateful to them all. You too can make a difference, so if you hear of or know of any criminals using holiday parks for drugs, weapons and other activities, please let us know.”
