Klaus Sommerer has died at the age of 84. He was one of the first men to join the Rosenfeld tennis community.

Klaus Sommerer, honorary and founding member of the tennis community, has died. He was the club’s most influential personality, said chairman Martin Sülzle.

Klaus Sommer was a founding member of the sports club’s tennis department, which was founded in 1976. In the first few years, Sommerer took on responsibility as construction manager for the construction of the first two courts; he was in charge from the approval to the completion. Sommerer organized countless work assignments.

The doer on many construction sites

When the club was founded and began operating independently, Sommerer was deputy chairman for three years. Klaus Sommerer was always the driving force behind further development, especially in the construction area. Over the course of decades he then took over the maintenance of the courts. He built up a great deal of knowledge about clay courts and their maintenance.

In addition to a lot of work, Sommerer was an excellent tennis player and well known in the area for his Sommerer scythe (slice forehand). His entire family played tennis. The strong father-son duo Klaus and Georg Sommerer, who were the best players at TG Rosenfeld for a long time, were also well known. Klaus Sommerer was also a committed and very popular team captain for decades, until old age forced him to hang up his racket.

Appointed honorary member

At the TGR general meeting in March 2022, Klaus Sommerer received well-deserved honors: Honorary membership of the tennis community, Golden Honor from WLSB and WTB.

Martin Sülzle described him as a “personality who was always happy to pass on specialist knowledge to the next generation and always supported with words and deeds. We are infinitely grateful to Klaus for having had him as the driving force behind TG Rosenfeld for over 46 years. We will remember him with honor.”

Fit on the bike too

In addition to tennis, Klaus Sommerer was also a great fan of cycling. In his youth he was a very successful racing cyclist, which kept him fit well into old age. Klaus Sommerer often came by racing bike and attended association round games of the women’s and men’s teams – no distance was too far for him. Sommerer was also the head of the building department of the town of Rosenfeld for many years and has rendered outstanding services to the town.
