Why is there a dispute between DirecTV and Disney?

Millions of DirecTV customers have been denied access to all of Walt Disney Co.’s networks since Saturday as the dispute between the two companies continues.

ESPN and other channels were removed from DirecTV just as the U.S. Open was underway and the college football season started last weekend.

At the heart of the dispute is the negotiation of a new content delivery contract. Since no agreement could be reached, ESPN, the Disney Channel and other Disney-owned channels became unavailable to millions of households.

Other channels removed from DirecTV include ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, ESPNU, ESPN News, ACC Network, SEC Network, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, FX, FX Movie Channel, FXX, Freeform, National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo Mundo and BabyTV, according to Phil Swann, editor of The TV answerman Website.

To compensate for the interruption, DirecTV customers can receive a $20 credit, but there are a few steps they must take to get it. Subscribers can access the credit here:
