New generation of watches: Larger and brighter display

Apple presented the tenth generation of its popular smartwatch at its “Glowtime” event. The Apple Watch Series 10 comes onto the market with a (minimally) revised design and new functions. The most striking feature of the Series 10 is its larger display. According to Apple, the screen even surpasses that of the Apple Watch Ultra.

The wide-angle OLED display is also said to be up to 40 percent brighter than its predecessor and allows an additional line of text to be displayed. Despite the larger screen, the new Watch is around ten percent thinner than the Series 9 at 9.7 millimeters.

Focus on health

An important innovation is the detection of sleep apnea. Using the acceleration sensor, the watch monitors the user’s breathing during sleep. If there are signs of breathing pauses, a notification is sent and a detailed report can be shared with the doctor. However, Apple is still waiting for approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Inside, the new S10 chip works with a “quad-core neural engine”. Apple promises improved noise cancellation and faster Siri processing. The battery life should still be 18 hours, but the Series 10 now charges faster: the new watch reaches 80 percent capacity in just 30 minutes.

New materials and colours

The Series 10 is available in aluminum and, for the first time, in titanium. The titanium version replaces the previous stainless steel model and is 20 percent lighter. The colors available are natural, gold and dark gray. The aluminum models also have the new color option “Jet Black.”

The Series 10 can now also play music and podcasts directly through the built-in speaker. According to Apple, the water resistance has also been improved so that the watch is now also suitable for water sports at depths of up to six meters.

Update for the Apple Watch Ultra 2

In addition to the Series 10, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is also getting an update. It is now also able to detect sleep apnea. Apple is also introducing a new color variant “Satin Black” – the first color change since the market launch two years ago.

Prices and availability

The Apple Watch Series 10 will be available starting September 20th at a starting price of $399. Pre-orders are already open. The updated Apple Watch Ultra 2 will still cost $799.
