The 26-year-old still has to wait for his first Grand Slam title.

For Taylor Fritz, pure disappointment prevailed. The American wanted to go down in tennis history in New York with his first home win in 21 years; almost 24,000 spectators cheered him on in the US Open final against Jannik Sinner. But it wasn’t enough. “I have the feeling that I have disappointed a lot of people,” said Fritz at the press conference following the clear 3:6, 4:6, 5:7 defeat against the world number one.

Positive aspects and disappointment

There are “obviously a lot of positives. And when I have some time to think about it, I will be happy to have made it to the final. But at the moment I am just disappointed,” said Fritz: “By many things on the court, how I played, how I made certain shots. The 26-year-old missed out on becoming the first American since Andy Roddick in 2003 to triumph in New York.

Financial comfort and prominent support

He is left with 1.8 million US dollars in prize money and a jump into the top ten of the world rankings. Fritz still has to wait for his first major title. Many celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Elon Musk and Matthew McConaughey also cheered Fritz on on Sunday. “I feel like the American fans have wanted a men’s champion for a long time. And I’m pretty upset about how I played,” said Fritz.

Fritz, who is now flying to Berlin to play at the Laver Cup, explained: “It’s a good time in the calendar to recharge a bit mentally.”
